Tom Brady and the Patriots put together one of the most shocking yet unsatisfying victories of the season after rallying from a 24-point deficit to defeat the Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos. A great game decided by a Patriots punt that deflected off the ground and struck a Broncos player only to be recovered by New England. You hate to see a game where two of the greatest quarterbacks of our generation squared off only to have it decided by an unlucky bounce of the football, but that’s all it takes sometimes.
In fantasy football, unfortunate strokes of luck happen all the time. That’s why there’s the waiver wire to help heal your wounds when an injury or benching occurs to one of your prominent players. Here are this weeks waiver wire pickups for Week 13.
Ladarius Green, TE San Diego Chargers (owned in 1% of Yahoo! leagues)
Week 12 stats @ Kansas City: 3 catches for 80 yards, one touchdown
Antonio Gates step aside. At 6’6, 238 lbs, Green is an athletic freak that hasn’t produced much due to limited playing time behind Gates, but we saw a glimpse of what he could be this week. With 4.4 speed, Green displayed big-play ability, catching a 60-yard touchdown pass and averaged 26.6 yards per catch. The week before against Miami, Green caught 4-of-5 targets en route to an 80-yard performance. Through 10 games this season, Green has just 11 catches yet is covering a ton of ground with 229 receiving yards. He’s slowly been creeping onto the radar and now’s the time to get him before he gets snatched up. The Chargers play the Jekyll and Hyde Bengals defense this Sunday.
Benny Cunningham, RB St. Louis Rams (owned in 3% of Yahoo! leagues)
Week 12 stats vs. Chicago: 13 carries for 109 yards, one touchdown
With the highly productive Zac Stacy leaving the game following a concussion, Cunningham played well in his absence. It’s a tactical play to grab Cunningham if Stacy can’t go this week, but yet it shouldn’t be your go-to move if you have better options because of his matchup. The Rams take on a tough San Francisco run defense in Week 13. There’s some value here in 14-team leagues or if you need a handcuff for Stacy in a 12-team league, but Cunningham shouldn’t be viewed as your savior.
Ace Sanders, WR Jacksonville Jaguars (owned in 0% of Yahoo! leagues)
Week 12 stats @ Houston Texans: 4 catches for 61 yards, no touchdowns
With 12 catches on 15 total targets for 121 yards in the last two games, we can’t ignore the Ace man any longer. A 5’7 speedy slot guy, Sanders is averaging 10.1 yards per reception and could be in line for similar production going forward if Mike Brown is still injured. But he’s only worth a shot if Brown remains out.
Bilal Powell, RB New York Jets
Week 12 stats vs. Baltimore Ravens: 11 rushes for 41 yards, three catches for 24 yards
After starter Chris Ivory went down, Powell picked up the slack a little bit. He’s a decent option if Ivory continues to be out.
Jacob Tamme, TE Denver Broncos (owned in 2% of Yahoo! leagues)
Week 12 stats @ New England: 5 catches for 47 yards, one touchdown
Made some big plays on Sunday night against the Patriots in a losing effort. He’s not a sexy option, and starter Julius Thomas is expected to return in Week 13, but he has some upside against a Kansas City team that lost two of its best pass rushers against San Diego.
Ryan Fitzpartick, QB Tennessee Titans (owned in 9% of Yahoo! leagues)
Week 12 stats @ Oakland: 20 for 42 for 320 yards, two touchdowns, zero interceptions
Hard to believe the 5-6 Titans currently hold the final AFC wildcard spot, but Fitzpatrick is keeping the Titans afloat. Only a year removed from being coined the franchise QB of the Buffalo Bills, Fitzpartick has thrown for 5 touchdowns and zero interceptions in his last three starts for the Titans. The Titans play the Indianapolis Colts this week, a team coming off a 40-11 blowout loss. Fitzpatrick scored 27 points against the Colts last time the two teams played.
Nate Burleson, WR Detroit Lions (owned in 23% of Yahoo! leagues)
Week 12 stats @ Green Bay: 7 catches for 77 yards, one touchdown
Burleson played a huge role in the Lions most recent choke job against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, seeing a whooping 10 targets. He far exceeded our expectations and has a plus matchup on Thanksgiving against a below-average defense in Green Bay.
